Linking to outside, "mini-site" on homepage

Is it a bad idea to link to another, related "mini-site" on the homepage?

Hi! I was wondering if it a bad idea (from an SEO standpoint) to have a link to a related, mini-site from the homepage. The mini-site is for a promotion that the company is running.

For example, the main website's URL is www.widgets.com and the mini-site's URL is www.widgetsweepstakes.com. Will I be penalized at all for doing this? Or is it ok?

In my opinion it's fine, as long as it's a logical extension of the user experience.
