Should I reciprocate if they already link to me?

And would it help to link to my clients?

Hello all,

A couple of questions, really:

1) Pretty much every independent reference site for my business already links to me. Would it be worth my while linking back to them? I feel personally that it's probably better as a one-way link, because those sites are independently claiming my site to be an authority on the subject. If the links went both ways, do you think search engines would think we had made some sort of reciprocal link agreement and thus give less kudos to those links?

2) Should I link to my clients on my client page? They are massive world-leading sites, so would this help me, or just them?

Stop thinking 'me' or 'them' and start thinking about your visitors.

If the links may be useful for them, then consider using the links as and where appropriate.

It seems very generous of these folk to link to you, without demanding / expecting a link back. Although it might seem mean not to reciprocate, it might be dangerous to do so, especially from a 'links page'.

If they genrously link to you, I suspect many may generously link to each other, which is their choice. But if you join in this mutual love fest, you make it much more likely that the whole interlinking thang will appear to SEs as a link exchange scheme - which these days is usually seen as a link exchange scam. And can be fatal.

The days are gone when reciprocals were just a matter of courtesy; these days they need to be considered carefully.
