In a nutshell I am looking into an affiliate programme which provides html inbound links.

To the best of my knowledge affiliate providers use tracking codes and cookies which provide no PR benefit to the merchant.

Second thought is, what if each affiliate had their own page hosted on my site: www.mysite.com/affilliate1/ Each affiliate is provided with an html link which points to this page (passing on PR to this domain). On arriving on this page cookie is set client site. If after 60 days client submits purchase form referrer gets paid.

Sounds too easy so no doubt this is nothing new.

Many thanks in advance to all those who share their ideas.

i'd just generate links to my normal selling pages with affiliate ID that would be 301d, i.e.:
www.mysite.com/landingpage.html?affid=1234 would set a cookie (or start a session) on visitor's PC and 301 to www.mysite.com/landingpage.html

the www.mysite.com/affiliate1 www.mysite.com/affiliate2 idea would cause you have hundreds of dupe content within your site.

Thanks Idolw.

Ok I would like to break your post down into ones and zeros so I may repeat in order to clarify.

Aim is to get some IB links to point to www.mysite.com/landingpage.html.

So set up an affiliate programme and provide each affiliate with a unique number, in this case 1234. As you point out, the affiliate link would be www.mysite.com/landingpage.html?affid=1234. Correct me if I am wrong but is this URL is fully spiderable and will it pass on PR?

This alone will cause multiple page duplication so as you suggest you would need to 301 www.mysite.com/landingpage.html?affid=1234 to www.mysite.com/landingpage.html.

But by using a 301 wouldn’t you negate the passing of link benefit? Wouldn’t using a 301 permanent redirect for this purpose also have the same outcome as if you had many duplicate pages?

Also would this not be an easy thing for SE’s to pickup on and nullify especially if you use well known affiliates or software that created affiliate URLs such as the one you mentioned above?affid=.

Ok that’s the sceptical part out of the way.

What would you recommend to someone who is very much a novice in this area who does not want to get his site banned, is on a minimal budget and has very little programming ability? CJ is not within budget as are most affiliates companies. Could this be done on a shoe string, in house with reliable, easy to setup software?

the www.mysite.com/affiliate1 www.mysite.com/affiliate2 idea would cause you have hundreds of dupe content within your site.

Yes of course it will (doh!) good point but wouldn't a 301 solve this problem?
