We've got an opportunity to buy a link from a major site for about 3K/yr. Kind of an ad space buy with a link included. Of course, we're judging this by relevancy and direct traffic - but wondered if the link would have any other additional benefits. A boost to the target site in the serps perhaps?

Anyone have thoughts to share...?

Possibly, but don't rely on it. If you're happy at $3k/year for the qualified traffic alone (and it sounds like you are), then anything else comes as a bonus really.
