So i'm doing some research on my site, and found another site that has an amazine amount of content for this one particular type of 'widget'. (anyone else tired of the widget scenario? hahah)
My site will layout all the widget types in the world, with pages and descriptions for each one. I'm not interested in copying this persons data. I really want to write up a single page that is similar in fashion to all my other content pages.
However, technically it would be very usefull to the readers if I were to link out to this persons site, from that particular widget page... after all, it certainly is the 'authority' on this particular type of widget.
The site in question is very good, has tons of content, but it's a .com... I understand that I can get some kudo's from google if I direct people to authority sites... i.e. .gov's, .edu's, .org's.
Will I gain, lose, or break even if I direct people to another site that appears to be nothing better than any other .com, but physically does offer a ton more content on the subject?

If it genuinely offers a ton of content, then it's better than "any other .com".
There's nothing to be lost by linking to the absolute best site/s in your field. It's good for your visitors, and good for SEO - it makes it more likely that you'll get unsolicited inbounds (this assuming you also have a lot of great content on the subject, and are just adding the links as a bonus), and this is what really makes you successful in the long-term.
Being an authority site means supplying the best info you can, and making it a true resource; linking out is part of it.
Linking to a good site is what's important here. A domain doesn't a good site make.
