I currently have a number of inbound links to my site, some 60 - 70 but Google only recognises 6. Yahoo, MSN and Alltheweb each recognise 50-60, but not all the same links. Yahoo reognises some that Yahoo does not and so on.

I have been getting some good rankings on various search engines, including Google, but I would like to increase my rankings. I know one important ingredient is inbound links. So the question is - Why does Google only recognise afew of my inbound links and not most of them.?

Some of the sites that link to mine have been up for some years, the links have been established for at least 4 months and these sites are large and well established.

Hi edavis and welcome to Webmaster World!

Google only shows a 'random sampling' of some of the sites that link to you, for SEO purposes it's nearly useless. You'll be better off using Yahoo.

Someone's going to come along and snip out your URL since it's against TOS to list it.

You can also use MSN to check your links.

In my experience, MSN seems to show the most links. Google won't even show my Yahoo and ODP directory links for some reason. Granted, some of those are newer, but that tells me that Google's index isn't as fresh.

Yahoo! seems to show the most links for areas I look at, but a lot of then are just from scraper sites.
