I seem to get alot of offers from people offering to do subdomain link exchanges..what I mean by this is I would get a list of sites..for example:

[blue.widget1.com...]
[green.widget1.com...]
[yellow.widget1.com...]
[blue.widget2.com...]
[green.widget2.com...]

etc..etc..my question is..Will doing link exchanges with these sites actually help me? Or is this a waste of time because they are just subdomains for the regular domain. Any advice is greatly appriciated!

Subdomains are viewed by search engines as seperate sites so a linking strategy that includes subdomains can create 3 way links. Assuming you are dealing with an honest link partner, link exchanges of this nature should be better than a straight site to site link swap.

I'd avoid it, subs have a bit of an iffy reputation with the SEs, and this latest links wheeze appears both obvious and transparent ;-)

I'd avoid it, too.

Are we certain engines are still treating subs as a seperate domain? I have a blog hosting site where each blog gets its own subdomain. Google subdomains currently show up as pages of the main site when using a site search.

Depends on how you're doing the search.

[site:example.tld] should return top level and all subs.

[site:www.example.tdl] should only return www sub.

If other subs are showing for the second search then this would be very, very curious.

You are correct jimbeetle. I use the site:example.tld search since I have the www 301'd.

Martinibuster, would you care to elaborate. I value your opinion on the one hand, but on the other hand, I have built my largest and most profitable travel site using 3 way link exchanges of this type.
I would be very curious to hear why you would avoid these types of links.
Thanks

Because I don't like to play games with links. Just give me a straight link dammit. ;)

These arrangements sometimes may not be good for the partners and I, as a partner, don't trade links with people who know enough about SEO that they do these kinds of things. I go to great lengths to trade links with people who never heard of WebmasterWorld.

"I go to great lengths to trade links with people who never heard of WebmasterWorld."

Lol. I know what you mean. In a similar vein, I don't link to, or ask for links from, sites that carry adsense.
