hI,

Are ads from say overture and google and banners you purchase on other sites considered on way links?

Also do they have any value as they obviously rotate.

Thanks

I shouldn't have thought so.

They usually have a URL which points to the adserver, which then redirects the browser to the appropriate page.

However, if you purchase direct links (http://www.yoursite.com) then obviously they will benefit you.

AdSense ads are Javascript, so the links are not even visible to SE robots.

Rather than start another thread, I'll ask here since its pretty related...

Are "outbound" links that get run through some onsite PHP script considered links by SEs? For example, I've got a site www.widgets.com, and this other site has a link to me. This link, however, is not the normal <a href> goodness I would like and does not show my widgets.com anywhere in the status bar or link properties. Instead, its a link to a PHP page on their site with a number variable. Clicking on it, though, does in fact bring you to www.widgets.com.

How do SEs handle this?
Is PR correctly passed around in this case?
Why do webmasters do this? Is it to make link management easier, or are they trying to recipricol link without fully living up to their end of the bargain?

Jfodale is describing a scripted redirect. You gain no benefit from such a redirected link. If this is what the site gives you for a link exchange they're being slimy sleazeballs. You can feel free to remove your link to them without notice since they're not living up to their end of the bargain.

It's even possible for them to hijack your webpage like this, though I think the SEs have gotten better at detected redirect hijacks.

Why do webmasters do this?

It will show up in their logs, it lets them know how many times a particular link was clicked on. Although, I think some log files can show the page the visitor went to after your site.

>>>Why do webmasters do this?

It's ostensibly to count outgoing links, but too often it's to hoard PageRank. And as has been mentioned before, any decent tracking system will track outgoing links.
