I'm going to the directories to add some new 1 way (non recip) links - Brett mentions 1 a day in his 26 steps - how many do you all think is safe to add a month without being penalized?

If I told you I had a website that obtained 100 links in a month would that be normal or excessive? It all depends on the topic. For example if I had a website that was about Jessica Simpson or Brad Pitt probably not. If I had a website about medieval puppetry, well that might stick out.
If you want a fuzzy number here's what I would do:
Get the URL's for the top 20 websites for your keyphrases
Discard any sites like Amazon, Ebay or Wikipedia
Go to the whois information and look at the site's registration date
Get backlinks from Yahoo and MSN use the smaller of the two
Divide the number of back links by the number of months
Stay under that number
Don't follow a pattern of getting exactly X number of links every month
Start small and gradually increase over time

As I build links for my clients I try to avoid every possible regular pattern. That means: alternate different link description, days, income and reciprocal, this and that keyword. The second point is: avoid the mass, go for quality. Until now I have never been banned, sandboxed and neither do the links disappeared.
