I'm going to the directories to add some new 1 way (non recip) links - Brett mentions 1 a day in his 26 steps - how many do you all think is safe to add a month without being penalized?

If I told you I had a website that obtained 100 links in a month would that be normal or excessive? It all depends on the topic. For example if I had a website that was about Jessica Simpson or Brad Pitt probably not. If I had a website about medieval puppetry, well that might stick out.

If you want a fuzzy number here's what I would do:

  • Get the URL's for the top 20 websites for your keyphrases
  • Discard any sites like Amazon, Ebay or Wikipedia
  • Go to the whois information and look at the site's registration date
  • Get backlinks from Yahoo and MSN use the smaller of the two
  • Divide the number of back links by the number of months
  • Stay under that number
  • Don't follow a pattern of getting exactly X number of links every month
  • Start small and gradually increase over time

As I build links for my clients I try to avoid every possible regular pattern. That means: alternate different link description, days, income and reciprocal, this and that keyword.
The second point is: avoid the mass, go for quality.
Until now I have never been banned, sandboxed and neither do the links disappeared.
