Hi,
I'm about to start yet another link building campaign. My other sites I just called the links directory "directory", "resources", or "links". Now I'm fairly sure google lowers the quality of links coming from pages with words like this in them and I am looking for some ideas about what other word I can use that may be more google friendly. What have you guys used on your sites?

I wouldn't be so sure the file name is that significant, if it walks like a links page etc....

While the name of the file or directory may throw up a flag I'd be willing to bet the structure of the page plays a larger role in a page being discounted. Close your eyes and you can see your standard links page. A hyperlinked phrase thats 2 to 5 words long followed by 2 to 5 sentences, repeat 30 to 200 times.

Now I'm not saying I haven't created hundreds or even thousands of pages just like those in the past, but I'm not creating any more that's for sure. If you were to ask me what would be the perfect page I'd want my link on it would be something like this:

  • 5 to 7 lengthy paragraphs.
  • The links would all be from phrases inside of sentences.
  • Links to at least 3 other websites, with at least one unquestionable authority website
  • Most outbound links would be to deep pages not homepages.
  • The page would be no more than 3 levels from the homepage.

    Some good points,
I'm definatly gonna put some effort into making something structured better than the standard issue link pages, as well as trying to find some better backlinks for my own site.

graywolf ... You just described my site to a tee and I give away links for free to every tourist related business in the country. On New Years Eve, I heard that one of the well established "directory" sites in my part of the world (who charges everyone for links) is "out to get me"!

ROFL ... If he only knew that he specifically was the reason I started to add all the content and free links to my site! I refused to pay him $400.00 annually for a link from his stinking site! I decided it would be more beneficial to my clients and me (in the long run) to beat him at his own game. Now he is frantically trying to catch up to me and is madly writing content so he might actually have something of value to offer those chumps still willing to pay the annual fee ... which has suddenly dropped to $200.00!

    Links pages are a joke!
