SCENARIO - Company XYZ starts a link campaign with the "pledge" to donate $$ to a charity for each link .. the company hopes it will be a popular program for bloggers ..

Anyone try anything like this before? Any thoughts on why it might or might not be effective?

I actually have a client and a nonprofit that want to partner up in this way .. so it's not just hypothetical for me!

How do I know that XYZ is really making the required donations?

Good question .. the donation payment would probably be made in a lump sum at the end of the campaign .. and if not made, then the nonprofit would naturally have a fit and generate some very bad publicity for XYZ ..

Hmm . But during the campaign .. how to provide assurance to potential linkers .. good question ..

It's a fairly common practice in merchandising .. "buy our product and we'll donate $$ to charity ABC" .. I think the success of a campaign like this depends on the inherent trustworthiness and credibility of the product/company .. I'd be more likely to "trust" a known company to do what they say .. rather than an unknown ..
