linking directories

I'm just starting to learn Unix & manipulate files on our server so this question is probably gonna seem trivial but I would appreciate some help.

We have 2 domains. They have separate IP addresses. They are stored in different subdirectories in our account's root.

They have a large number of pages in common.

We would like to have only 1 set of pages & images to simplify maintenance.

Each domain uses relative addressing & we want SE's to think the pages are on the domain it's spidering instead of on a different domain.

Do we need to have 2 copies of each of the pages & images, one set in each domain's subdirectory or can they just be links (linknames?) in one of the subdirectories?

Will Apache tell the spider about the link or is that just internal Unix and Apache doesn't know about it?

(Aside from the concern about dup pages in an SE, are there any other reasons to avoid this approach?)

My situation might be a little different (I think) because I'm working with different domains instead of subdomains and they have different IP addresses
