Do links in online PDF files count?

I recently had a bunch of articles published in some newsletters, which were mostly published in PDF Formats online. Do you know if the links in the author byline would count by Google or Yahoo?

Are they active links or just text that look like links? If you browser can follow it, then the spiders will. Should not matter what the source is.
