Link crawlers

Do they really work?

I've came across some "link crawler softwares" and Im wondering if they really work.Do they operate fully in automatic or do they need to enter a previous e-mail adresses database in them?

I've already some of them,but I'm not able to understand if they search mail automatically or if I have to enter previously a "mailing list".
Anyone can tell me that?

they search yahoo or google etc.

Lots of people are taking emails off their websites these days because of the crawlers. Not as good as it used to be.
