Newbie Question about backlinks

Ok hopefully I can explain what I am trying to ask so bare with me. Lets say I want my site to come up for the keywords widget, blue widget, red widget, green widget, my site domain is widgetcentral.com. Now I know I need backlinks to rank good in the search engines, So I go and find 5000 backlinks and use the text "Have a widget problem? This is the place to find information on all all types of widgets" Now this has the keyword widget in it and links to widgetcentral.com will it help me at all with the other three keywords? Or do I have to get backlinks like "Have A Blue Widget and need advice? We are the authority on blue widgets." linking to www.widgetcentral.com/bluewidgets. Hopefully atleast some of that makes sense. I guess in a nut shell do I need custom backlinks for each keyword and there specific page?

The answer is use all three. You'll want to get back links that contain the pharse you are ranking for.
If you want to rank under blue widget, get a back link that contains blue widet. If you want to rank under green widget, get back links with green widget in the anchor text.

Also, you do not want 5000 back links with the same anchor text, this would raise a flag.

Two more question. Do I have to have by backlinks which containe the term greenwidget point to www.widgetcentral.com or www.widgetcentral.com/greenwidget.html?

You can have you link point to whatever you like. It depends on where you are trying to get the person to go.

When a person does a search for green widget - if you want them to reach the home page and then figure out where to find green widgets from there (then link it to the homepage) or do you want the person to enter on the green widgets page (then link it to the green widget page). IME, the more targeted the page, the better for conversions.
