How much to vary anchor link text when developing links?

When developing links, I have read that it’s important to vary the anchor link text or Google may decrease the link value.

I’m thinking about having different anchor link text for each 10 incoming links. Would this be good, or should I vary anchor link text even more to avoid Google decreasing the link value?

I simply ask the person giving the link to choose his/her own anchor.

Good idea, but it can’t always be done. For example when using a submission form.

Yes but then don't you have to enter your own without the use of a script?

I think this is too much variation - you'll never be able to target your site correctly. I would just get 5-6 different anchors and vary them. Maybe, having a higher percentage of 2 or 3 anchors (your top keyphrases)

Also, don't forget to have a few links with "http://www.yoursite.com" and "Yoursite.com" - it looks natural.

Hmm. Are you sure about that? Wouldn't you need a rewrite to add www to requests for yoursite.com?

I took it to mean add this:
<a href="http://www.yoursite.com/">Yoursite.com</a>

That is what I meant.
