Can you legally have a link to any website or web page you want to, even if the owners of the other site say they want you to remove the link?

The link says nothing bad or inappropriate - just a simple link that's all.

In other words, can a website make you remove a link from your own website that points to theirs?

If ANY website asked me to remove a link, I would do just that, and immediately.

I would want to know why of course, but down it goes, before asking any questions.

My question, is why you would even ask? - Larry

Legal questions should be addressed to an attorney. It is against the law in many states to dispense legal advice without a license to practice law.
