Three way links

Are there any negatives to it?

Normally I've just been requesting your standard Site A links to Site B, Site B links to Site A, reciprocal link exchange...

But I also have another site that is in the same industry. Would it be best if I started linking from my first site, and then requesting that they link to my second site? I imagine so, since it appears as though it works out better for both myself and the link partner.

But I'm just wondering if there are any unwanted side effects of constructing such link relationships.

Thanks.

Yeah, if detected, 3-way linkexchanges can not be treated other than attempt to game SEs.

In traditional linkexchange the SE benefit is sometimes primary, sometimes secondary, but never exclusively for SEs.

Hmm. I've said this elsewhere: Google can detect three way linking activity in less time that you can say "three way linking".

If it is capable of being detected it's safe to work on the premise that it is being detected. Whether they've acted on it already or will act on it in future is something they are unlikely to share with us ;)

How could it be detected? Looking for similar sites that are being linked to from your backlinks? Or if your sites are on the same server?

Very easily. With the data at Google's disposal they'd need to hit only one key to identify your spammy* links.

*why spammy? Why else would you want to hide it from an SE?

If you look at the google touchgraph you will see how easy it is to reverse engineer such a simple link patern.

However, many people are doing it and are safe *for now*.

But what if the links are mixed up so that some are link exchanges, some are one-way ins, some one-way outs, and some 3-ways? I doubt that the pattern would be so obvious.

If you have enough time to create more complex links then do it. It should go without saying that given enough effort, any search engine can detect linking stragegies but don't let it stop you from trying.

just suppose, I have two sites, Site A has been around for awhile and it ranks #1 for for virtually all keyterms related to it, with indented #2 results for most all these terms. When you are #1 and #2, you simply cannot rank higher.

So, I launch Site B, not the same, but similar, related industry to Site A. It has no PR, it has no one linking to it. However, I've learned a bit since creating Site A and I've applied these lessons to Site B, which in my opinion is a better site than Site A. To parlay the ranking and popularity of Site A to Site B I give links from Site A in exchange for links to Site B. All I want is for these other sites to take a look at my Site B and if in their opinion it is a worthy site, to link to it. Since Site B does not at this time have ranking or traffic, I give a link from Site A, which does have rank and can pass traffic.

So, I have a tire & wheel shop where I do good business, Joe's Tire Kingdom. I want to parlay my reputation and the income I've earned into another business, so I start Joe's BBQ Kingdom. I put posters on the wall at Joe's Tire Kingdom that say "Eat at Joe's". I even go across the street to Mary's hair salon and say, "hey, I'm Joe, from across the street, you buy your tires from me. I've started a resteraunt and I would like to put this flyer on your wall that says, "If you like our tires, you'll love our BBQ. Eat at Joe's"

There is nothing wrong with using one business or site to promote another one. In fact, if prosperity is a virtue, then it may even be unethical to not do so.

neuron, so put 500 posters in your Tyre and Wheel shop for all the Marys and Marthas and Marions and Marilyns and Millys and Mandys....from all over the world selling everything from bras to brassballs.

And have all of them put up a poster in their shops specifically for Joe's BBQ Kingdom in Litle Town, Pennsylvania.

It may work very well for you. It looks very natural.
