I have two sites, 1 candle related and another finance related.
On the candle site I have good ranking and requests for link exchanges thru my add site page. I collect the information they provide for their link on my candle website and have my link information point to the finance site. I am not tricking the people because the link I show them I want on their website is very specific to loans and url shows the loan site and description.
I do this because I hear it is more important to have links pointing to a site without a reciprocal link back. The loan industry is much more competitive than candles and the links to the loan site are one way.
Some people ignore the loan link and post a link to the candle site. Either way I reciprocate. In the long run I will have a ton of one way links to the loan site and hopefully will be able to enjoy some decent rankings.
Any opinions on this subject?

This is a common "A links to B then B links to C" link scheme.
Don't participate in link schemes designed to increase your site's ranking or PageRank. In particular, avoid links to web spammers or "bad neighborhoods" on the web as your own ranking may be affected adversely by those links.
[google.com...]Avoid SEOs that talk about the power of "free-for-all" links, link popularity schemes, or submitting your site to thousands of search engines. These are typically useless exercises that do not affect your ranking in the results of the major search engines. At least, not in a way you would likely consider to be positive.

I think it's a great idea. You have two business sites, Site A and Site C. Site A is doing well and in your prosperity you want to capitalize on your web expertise and so have launched Site C. This is the way that wealth propagates and flourishes. You take your profits from one operation and fund another one. Certainly this is the way it works in the brick and mortar world of car dealers and book stores. And so it is with the semi-cyber world of stocks, bonds, futures, options, and other securities. Why should the internet be any different?
If I had Joe's Tire & Truck Center and decided I wanted to start a restaurant, I would certainly put signs on the wall saying "Eat At Joe's BBQ Diner", and I would even hand out discount coupons (with every purchase of a set of tires or a 4 wheel brake job) to encourage them to eat there. Is what you are doing any different?
You are asking people to look at your other site "C" (either explicity or implied) and to link to it if they in their good judgment find it to be a worthwhile site, and if they do you reciprocate (definded here as "mutual benefit") a link to their site from your site "A".
Are we so mad in fear that our scheme (systematic plan of action) becomes convolutedly confused with a scheme (trickery or underhanded)?
Of course your plan is a sound one. How dare you allow yourself to be caught up in the twisted nonsense of the naysayers of doom and the fear mongers.
You haven't even mentioned any of the common misconceptions of SEO like that you should put sitewide cross links from Site A to Site C and back, so it sounds like you've a good sense for what to do. All you are doing is asking other sites to look at your site, and to link to it if in their opinion the site has value.
And while I was putting up my "Eat at Joe's" signs in my own tire shop, I would cross the street to Jill's Hair Salon (which of course has nothing to do with Tires or Food) and ask her to put up an "Eat at Joe's" sign. I might even go to the bank (since if they want me to pay the money back that I borrowed to start the BBQ place) it would be a good idea to send me some traffic and a sign right under the teller window might just do the trick, and where ever else I could put up my signs I would (at quality establishments only, of course).
Everybody eats! And everybody needs some financial services at times too, and if they don't, they should.
