Link Development without the Software?

Everyone here says don't use it

I've been working on setting up links on one of my sites. I have the links page broken down into about 14 directories with closely-related themes in my small niche.
I've put about 20 top links in 2 categories so far. I found these sites through Google.
My plans are that I will put about 20-30 top links in each directory. I will then put a script so that others can link into this directory by placing a reciprocal link to my site.

I've been looking at link management software lately. Here is what I need.
- Creating Directories
- A script that lets people submit their site when a reciprocal link is up. (I will check every request to make sure it is valid. It has to fit the theme or it won't go in)
- A way to find possible links that I can add to my directory. I would then email asking to exchange links or simply put them in my link directory.

Everyone in this forum says I shouldn't buy software to help manage this. I just don't understand why I shouldn't buy if it helps out. I do not have any programming experience so I would need to buy a script to have people submit their site once their reciprocal link is up anyway.

Please let me know of any information as to why I shouldn't buy if I use it correctly. Thanks

Who told you this? I want names! You might not even serve time if you confess now and agree to testify. (joking)

The main issue with link management softs is their ability to be used in lazy or full-auto mode, whereby you end up spamming tens of thousands of people, inviting links from sites that are totally inappropriate. Since using linking softs in such a manner is pretty much more self-destructive than it is beneficial it would be illogical to use it in such a manner, but some people just can't seem to help it.

Just because a Corvette will do 165 mph doesn't mean you should drive it at that speed all the time if at all. A lot of people think in absolutist terms. If you have it you will use it. These are the ones that think people are inherently immoral or who think everyone that drinks alcohol is alcoholic.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with using link management software as long as you use it responsibly. I would not recommend you let your under-13 child play with this software.

Link building is a very methodical process. Softwares will certainly help but not to the full extent. Many a times if we gather wrong links then the loss could be ranging from banning your website by SE's to giving away the benefit to other website. So you should be careful.
