Can too many links at once hurt your site?

I have went out and I am able to get 20 to 30 links a week coming into my site. Some of them I exchange links with and a few I am able not to have to link back to them... either by paying for the link or they simply do not require it.

Can I be penalized for getting too many links at once?

My competitors have thousands of links and in order to get anywhere near the top of the search engines I will need a decent amount of lincoming links.

20 - 30 links/week is probably below their radar -- but yes, Google is definately watching for 'unnatural' linking patterns. Not only are they watching, they are exceedingly clever at sniffing them out.

Don't assume that just because your competition has 1000 incoming links that you need that many as well.

keep going with 20 - 30 a week for 6 months, then take a breather for 2 or 3 months and see where you are at.

if you got 20,000 links in a week, from just a handful of domains, you might burn your site. However, if you got 20,000 links in one week from 20,000 different domains, you wouldn't have a problem.

your a funny guy. He said 20-30/week not 20 with a k on the end.

you're right. 20,000 links in a week is absurd. The most I can muster is about 2500 (from different domains). never seen anything like a penalty as a result of it though.

are there any sites that anyone recommends to find links at? Currently I am doing it on a find basis. Basically just jumping around on the search engines. If I could do 200 a week I would be thrilled.

i knew a guy with 2500 links he used to be since last week #1 for a competitive kw 2 words in a very competive industry,he droped down in #35 while another page with less then 50 links is now #1 ,that means things are changing rapidly......dont waste your time with tones of links the future or a running update will show soon its results.

Don't forget something important, it is not only the number of links that is important, but also the quality of links. You get a better value if the site that is linking to you that has a high PR and is also related in topic to yours. I would not bother with any links less than PR3. Just to give you an example of what I am talking about...one PR 5 link is much better than 10 PR 1 links... one PR 7 link is much better than a 100 PR3 or less links. Also, don't forget that the PR we see on the Google toolbar is about 2 months behind and not always accurate...so the best way is to check the backlinks of the sites you are going to get links from to see if they themselves have many links.

check out your competition BLs, then those and so on and before long your have 1000's of sites to contact thats what I've been doing for years and it works well

Can't catch their radar for some reason.... =)

Some periods we were adding even 1000 links per day. Hadn't hurt a bit, only pushed rankings up.

I'll have to disagree with you - all links count. Y! and MSN I dont think even have PR value system. I can outspam my site against yours with a couple of thousand no value links against your thousand high PR links.

Life does not end with Google, money spenders mostly search on portals like Y! and MSN.

Don't be too quick to turn up your nose at a "little" link. Remember that links can support you in other ways than just PR.

Some of those low PR links can send a lot of traffic.
