I've a supplementary question:
If (just hypothetically ;) ) I had a site with a domain of generic-widgets.com, with variouscoloursof.generic-widgets.com as subdomains, would the link pop for each subdomain be taken into account for the others?
I've manually reviewed many sites and pages and found that the majority of standard links feed back to the home page of the domain. This boosts the home page.
Link popularity seems to work in steps and if you try using the search facility [webmasterworld.com] here at WebmasterWorld you'll find a great number of discussions on this. What I mean is, you need some basic links to get anywhere these days, however, the volume of links does not seem to carry the weight it used to have in the early days. In other words, the spammers activity caused the search engines to re-evaluate the importance placed on linking. Sheers volumes of links does not neccessarily boost a site higher.
Sugarkane, assuming you are linking all the pages together, they become part of the site. It's the keyword linking that creates best value and works best here, rather than the site linking.
The value of the link climbs as the external domains link into the original domain with the kw. You're creating "themes" (ref Brett Tabke) with this approach.
The value placed on a link should be considered this way:
In decending value
Yahoo link in=1
ODP, Looksmart, etc. Link in =2
External sites on theme link in =3
Internal links on theme (obviously, you need these to make your site themed) link in=4
Links on theme linking out = 5
External links on any subject linking in =6
Links on any subject linking out =7 Not really worth doing unless you're earning money from the link!
Linking out is of prime value to the other site, although the fact that you've got a themes link out does indicate to the SE that you have something relevant on the site.
If the number of on-theme outbound links is significant, the site is called a "hub". It there is a significant number of on-theme inbound links, that's called an "authority". Either category would mean extra pop, over and above link count.
The link text means a lot. The exact weighting certainly shifts over time.
>Linking out is of prime value to the other site
Yes, understood! And if I'm also working on the other sites, it's a multiplied bonus. I have control of all the links, and so they will most certainly contain the keywords.
I am also arranging links with some other carefully selected sites, of a similar or related nature, and will send them the snippets of code for the links back - so then everyone will be happy, even though they won't quite know how or why.
re: significant number of inbound or outbound links
How many is considered significant?
That's an area which each engine can tweak in their algo -- and they probably do, as the climate changes.
A few months ago I heard that AltaVista showed an extra pop at 500. I haven't seen any research for Google.
When I check the Google link count for the kind of site that is obviously both an authority and a hub (about.com for instance) I see 1,100 links for the themed, secondary domains (for instance, cars.about.com) and 141,000 for the TLD (www.about.com).
