are links with redirect of any value?

A lot of paid directory sites use indirect links to your site. I suppose this is necessary for ppc to track number of clicks, but it seems to be used for subscription insertions as well.

Do these links help at all with search engine ranking or should we just be searching for hard direct links?

I’m no expert on the subject but have read many times to not bother linking with redirected links.

My theory is that each redirection incurs a slight PR-passing reduction similar to if the link was to "page.html" and page.html contained nothing but a link to your page.
