In September of last year I launched my first site. I spent months gathering 300 themed links which helped me get to a pr 6 for a period of time before dropping the last few months. Tonight I felt a little burned out so I decided to clean up my links directory as the creative fires just wern't burning.
I decided to verify my link was posted on sites I exchanged with, yes that's how burned out I am. Shock set in as I soon discovered many of the sites I thought I exchanged with never posted my link, or did what appears only long enough for me to verify and then took it down. Out of 87 sites I've checked so far 44 of them failed to post my link or have taken it down. My site is fishing related and in one particular category(bass fishing) I found 12 sites I have posted in my directory who don't have my link present. Some of which I remember verifying and even corresponding with their Webmasters.
The Questions:
Is this how many people do business on the web?
Has anyone else seen this problem?
Is there an easy to use directory that also verifies exchange links periodically?
I'm not sure if I'm mad or just disgusted so any advice, info or opinions would help. Thanks

It is quite normal that your link partners will move your link to another page or totally remove your link from their sites after the deal of link exchange. Yes, that can be painful, but it is not necessary to fire your angers.

Personally I experience the same case like yours - perhaps thousands of times. Nowaday, I find it very normal. If anyone removes my links, I will remove his or her too (in case I think their link page is good and mine is equal match, then I may drop a reminding note, otherwise delete).

Therefore, you may need some link management software to "re-verify" that your link still exists at regular interval.

In link exchange game, there is no permanent friends and no permanent enemies, at least in my opinion.

Thanks for the advice, some of the sticky mail I received tells me this is an everyday occurrence. From my side of this I would never remove someone's link unless they changed the theme of their site or began showing inappropriate material. I guess link development is nothing short of a game. Which makes me wonder why even put myself through the hassle if the moment I turn my back the link will be removed. Wow, what happened to ethics? I guess I need some link verifying software. Does anyone know of a good links directory which also monitors links?

One thing about the link verification software. Use it as a means to flag missing links only and do not remove any links before you review those flagged link pages manually. In a number of occasions, it can reports errors and makes you blunder into removing good links.

Some of your link partners might not really remove your link, but instead move it to the other page without any notification. This new page may not be bad. Look for your link by searching the site with your link text on Google Search Site; this will help you find the new location page quickly if it is existed.
