Links page…professional/unprofessional

Do you think it is professional idea that a respectful site have links page, if not then what is the alternatives?

It depends on the business and industry.

But ... a "Resources" page seems to be more in vogue now. You put your links in there, your PDF white papers maybe, things like that.

I think putting a link directory or resources directory will not undermine the professionalim of a site as long as it provides relevant content.

It can even attract more visitors as I believe the more the no. of web page, the higher the chance to get visitors from search engines.
