I am designing my new web site and was reading about search engine promotion. I beleive that links from other good sites helps your site to get a good rank. Can anybody suggest any good site, where I can submit my page for linking with other web sites? Whats the best way to contact other companies for link exchange? Should I give away my competitors link as well? Should I only link to relevant links? or Any general good links will do?

Incoming links are the foundation of a strong website. In my opinion, the more relevant the links are to your website, the stronger your position will be (this is just an opinion). And more is better. This works across most, if not all, search engines. Did I say more is better?

  • Links will help you be found and indexed into the search engines.

  • Links are the pathways the search engine spiders use to get to your website, so be sure to receive some deep links. This will assure that the spiders will get to your deeper content and rank them better.

  • Don't be afraid to link out to high quality websites that will help your site visitors. For instance, if you have an accountant website, it might make sense to put a link on your website to a government website where your site visitors can download tax forms.

  • There are a number of ways to contact a company for a link exchange. Whichever method you choose however, (and this is obvious but some people still forget) make sure they have a link exchange page. Second, find out who the relevant person to email is. Third try to personalize your link request (even if you are automating the process it's still possible to personalize).

There are many strategies for a link campaign. Some people like to link to websites then contact the webmaster. I'm not fond of that technique, but others report good results. It's up to you with what you feel comfortable with.
