Have read amongst the posts here that it doesnt seem good to have a massive links page with a load of links. How then is it possible to get a great link popularity if you dont reciprocate?

I have a links page with around 35 links on it (all reciprocal) and would like to increase my link pop. But this doesnt seem possible without adding a load more reciprcals. Any ideas/advice?

The first is try to get into as many directories as you can. Some are free and some cost a little per year. Some cost a lot per year and month. Do a searach for you top term go to all the sites in the top 5 pages and ask each one for a link. Do the same thing for every related search phrase you can think of. Keep track of who you contact so you don't ask the same site twice. Getting links is a lot of hard work.

This only works if you have a site worth linking to. If you have just an affiliate site or you don't have unique content it may not work.

You have to make a site worth linking to.

Another area is to go to DMOZ and look at all the family sites and ask each one of those to link to you. You can also buy links. Some sites have banner space for sale. Ask them if you can put just text in that space. You will get credit for the anchor text.

I recently started a thread about that in supporters, but some key factors:
-Make subpages and write about the site you want a link from. It usually gives you a backlink if you've done a good article.

-Buy links

-Get into directories

-Become known by the people in your market and look out for articles where they will quote you and name your site as well

I don't have a links page on any of my sites and NEVER reciprocate links. I just make sure that they all have such good content that people want to link to me - all of them are now >pr5.

What ogletree said.

It is 100% about unique content and having something worth linking to. Then you find it starts to happen all on it's own.

imao it takes long time

i have 100 backlinks on my website that has started just 6 months back, but one thing is that one person works on it everyday to put in articles,
it has around 2500 pages which contain news and articles

but still i think i should be having around 500 links to get a good pr for all my pages, at moment only first page has better rank

will have to labour a lot more

Thanks for all the replies. I guess the 'content is king' factor weighs in here so other sites will want to link to me for my original content (the site is an original one .... at the moment!).

My link popularity at the moment is around 430 so it could do with some improvement. Is it ethical to ask for a link without reciprocating? or just wait until people discover the site and want to link to it?

Buksida, it's perfectly ethical to suggest that another site link to you, although some will certainly ask you to reciprocate. Just politely decline the latter and say you hope they'll consider your site valuable enough to list anyway. Of course, if you have a current links page your argument may sound a bit hollow - you may want to scan that page and pare it to a group of sites you can defend, e.g., "We link only to widget trade associations and widget shows."
