I am optimizing my site at the moment and was wondering how important it is to have links to my site on other peoples sites. Is it a major factor or can i do without it?

in my opinion links are a definite plus whe it comes to getting your site recognised .

You definitely need links if you want to get into and stay in the search engines.

It is the number one factor in SEO. Unless you are going after easy words then your title is.
