what is the proper way of doing text linking? If you are a cheap widgets buyers guide, and you have
text link for the kw "cheap widgets comparison" and "cheap widgets" would the second increase the ranking for
"widgets" more or the first one? I think the second one, because the link text only has 2 keywords, whereas
the first has 3.

Make your text link natural. Think in Human way, and don't just stuff the link with keywords. It just hurt your ranking, and cannot entice visitors to click. Finally, you get no traffic.

Make the text appealing to human beings. Otherwise, you can't get much traffic.

Eternity, the old answer used to be to use the exact anchor text for the phrase you are trying to rank for. In more recent months, it seems that unnatural linking patterns for competitive phrases have resulted in rank reduction. So, I'd recommend you use a varied, natural linking pattern where most of the links contain your phrase but not always to the exclusion of other words.
