Inbound links and articles can work nicely for both areas.

I know this sounds glib but try and produce good original content, easier said than done I know.
Also CSS -this has probaly been the best thing wev'e done as it gets rid of a lot of messy formatting stuff which doesn't help your pages get indexed. Also allows for rapid changes in design.

After rereading your question I wanted to add read webmasterworld as much as possible. There is no easy way to get ranks - and if you're in a competitive industry, it will actually be pretty hard. Read, learn, read, learn, read, ask, learn ;).
