Inbound Links

Should I be directing inbound links to certain pages?

I've recently read that it's beneficial to direct inbound links to pages that are optimizing search terms that are containing the same text as the inbound link. Is this truly effective, or should I keep having other sites direct their links to my index page?

I think there is some truth to it. But if you raise the PR of your homepage it should raise the PR of the pages your index page links to...

i have others link to my index page. It then gives weight to my other pages. :-)

This really depends on the website's depth and breadth of topic.

A general rule (I follow by) it is better to spread the wealth around particularly in larger websites with diverse topical link hierarchy (simply - if you have lots of sub-topics [that have many pages below them] then better to spread your links around).

If a small website with few "primary content" pages - my rule would almost certainly defeat the purpose - thus keep to mainpage.

If you have a page other than your index page that you want to be found by search engines then one way to do it is to make sure it is getting enough internal PR. You can control how much potential PR each page on your site can get by altering your site's link structure. The key word to keep in mind here is potential. You may find that you are wasting PR on pages that aren't important or that the page you need found is not getting enough. It's your PR once it hits your index page and you can control it however you want. Of course you need to have some inbound PR coming in from other sites to your index page for this to work. I do believe that getting links to individual pages will raise that pages rank but if you ever decide to change that pages name or remove it you waste all that effort getting those links.
