blog links?

Is it ok to fill out blogs and guestbooks to draw the search engines in fast? I did it with another site and Google fully spidered that site within 24 hours. But later almost all of those links were dropped and I had to resort to more conventional link building. Is there a downside to doing this to jump-start a new site?

there is a downside if you post your email address along with your url: you will get 10x more spam than you could imagine. I get spam in German, Spanish, Danish, Finnish, Latvian...
