the mail msg was, though a tad more polished, along these lines:

while surfing on [SE], I noticed your site was at number [X] for [kw-a kw-b kw-c]. I operate an up and coming directory that is related to these kw's,and I think your users would find it helpful. It's ranks at [c] on [SE] and the link we've added to you could bring you some desirable traffic.

I would appreciate if you would add a link back to our directory. I will leave the link up for yada yada and then check back to see if you've also decided to link back to us ... yada, yada, yada

Ok, not the best request, not the worst, except for one small detail. Did ya already notice I dinna give a single clue what site wanted the link? Well, that's because the requester dinna give me a clue either.

Beyond letting me know there is somewhere on the web a directory that noticed a 3 kw combo (that I can't fathom being of any use to my target audience), I have no hints at all.

Please, don't let this happen to you.

That's hilarious. I got almost the exact same e-mail. They got my site "listed" in some directory that had nothing to do with my site at all, was actually using an old domain that we don't use, and didn't actually link to it, only had the URL in text and it was a PR 0 page. Then they wanted a link back to their spiffy high PR site. After I explained why this was not a good idea for me to do at all, I never got a reply...
