I have been working on link exchanges for one of my websites, and have encountered all sorts of creative tricks people are trying.

Inserting stars, hearts or diamonds in the title.
Putting bold tags around the title.
Using contrasting, and even multiple font colors.

Do people really just copy and paste this stuff without previewing it?

Never.

I put the link on my site to other sites to fit the style and content of my links page and in the format that is most useful to visitor to my site.

I usually provide link code along with examples of how various links will look. Certainly, sites are free to adjust the appearance to fit their site, but doing some preformatting is often helpful for web newbies. Obviously, weird characters are overkill and counterproductive in most cases.

I've been getting quite a few link requests now that say, "We have reviewed your site and want you to add your site to our directory" then they give a link to a form for me to fill out.

Oh, then they require a recip.

How lazy, add my site yourself if you like it so much, I have enough work to do without them giving me 'homework' ;o)
