Webrings

Anyone using them or are they a thing of the past?

Just wondering if anyone uses webrings anymore. I don't hear anything about them at all.
I'm looking at ways to bring in more customers and was just wondering if webrings are worth even considering.

Any info on webrings would be aprreciated. Thanks!

I doubt this is the correct forum but I can't find any forum that seemed better.

I would vote "thing of the past". I still see them on some hobby-type sites, but I'm not sure if they were ever a good marketing tool (much less in this day and age).

I'd say this is the right forum.

All I've heard about webrings lately is that sometimes they link to bad neighborhoods, and so the whole webring ends up getting penalized.
They're sort of cute and old-fashioned. I don't think a current, professional site really needs to be involved in one anymore. They're very mid-90s early web...

actually, I maintain a few webrings on the topic of my site.
If managed properly, webrings can bring quite a bit of targeted traffic to the member sites.
It is of course important that the sites are of a high quality and that navigation is easy - meaning that the ring navigation should be placed on pages that are attractive to the visitors and that no "breaks" occur in the rings.
At least webring.org offers a number of tools making it easy to achieve this: sites without navigation can be automatically suspended and nowadays they even have a neat feature allowing you to have just one navigation bar on your page, even though your site may belong to multiple rings (the system will always display the ring you are currently navigating if the siteowner opted for this version) - so pages full of navbars should be a thing of the past.
There now also is a rudimentary forum system attached to the rings.
Many changes have taken place since the migrations to and from Yahoo - it could be worthwhile to check out the "new webring".
