Maybe it would be more beneficial traffic wise to have a dozen or so link from their site on targetted pages, each with unique text (possibly deep links) and / or banners / graphical adverts.
Traditionally US based sites have much more traffic than their UK counterparts (assuming that the subject area is broad and has not much geographical variation).
User_x visits their site and sees your link on every page. They will eventually not even notice it.
However if the same user occaisionally came across your "advert" on different pages, in different contexts, there is more chance of them clicking through.
I arranged a banner / link exchange with an US based site when one of my sites was newly established (mine had a largely Euro focus at the time).
We each got a few text links and a few 150 by 60 ads.
For the next few months that site was my top non-SE referer.
