How to get backlinks?

Hi, I feel comfortable with all aspects of SEO except link backs? I guess my fear is that I'm not sure of the right yet time efficient way of getting links.

The way that I have picked up from my reading here and other sites is to simply find sites of high page rank and of course the site needs to be somewhat "relevant" and politely ask the webmaster to link back, after making a comment on their site to prove you took the time to look at their site. My results here have not been great for a site that has a PR of 3/4. If anyone has other recommendations of other ways of getting legitimate links, I would really appreciate it.

Thanks
David

Hire a contractor to do it on a per link basis. Give strict guidelines as to the type of links you want and what you will pay for each verified link. Then work on your site's content.

There is no substitute for hard work (by you or by someone you pay). For ideas to make that work more productive take a look at the library [webmasterworld.com].

A simple formula, the more you ask the more you get

Thanks for the replies so far. As I'm reading the various posts on this newsgroup I come away thinking that all the effort putting into getting links will eventually be wasted because google and others will catch on to this. So now the new effort will be getting one way links. This will no doubt be a much more difficult task then reciprocal links.

Thanks

Indeed David. One way links are even difficult. But once you get'em they get you results forever.

Staw away from Link Farms, FFA Links, Guestbook Links etc etc etc!

I just posted in a different forum: GREAT content. That's how you get one-way links. When you start being referenced on other sites, blogs, wherever ... with links like "dross explains [link starts here]how to build and maintain a spinning widget[link ends] on his web site", you'll see your site rankings on the rise.

Content, content, content....give them a reason to link to you, and they will (eventually).

As many inbounds as you can from every source you can. One way PR7's great I'll take all I can get, but 100000 recipricals linking deep into our site I'll take also.

If you have 1 of the millions of RX sites, no one with a decent site is going to one-way link to you for your content. However many will link to you for $$$.
