When requesting a link should I have the site link to my homepage or the page within my site that is relevant to the content on their site.

Example: My Site is about "Widgets" but I have sub categories such as "Outdoor widgets", "Indoor Widgets", "Water Proof Widgets", etc.

The site that will link to me is specifically about "Indoor Widgets". Do I have them link to my homepage "Widgets" or the "Indoor Widgets" page?

I am thinking that whichever page it will link to will receive the PR boost. Is this correct?

Thanks in advance.

I would have them link to indoor widgets ... you are offering a page that exactly matches their visitor interest. Plus, you can use the keyword phrase in the link url and text, another SE plus.

Yes pagerank will be distributed to the page linked to, but at some point in time, you need to build PR on subpages, as well as your home page, so when you get an opportunity like this, I say grab it! :)

My 2 cents,

The question is: What do your potential customers search for? Are they more likely to be searching for widgets, and then to navigate to the relevant type of widget, or do they search directly for outdoor widgets?

Your logs should have a partial answer to that question. I say partial answer, as your logs only show those who found you!

For the most part I'd say they are looking for a widget for a specific use. Around 80% of the time. Although I do pick up some sales from people who are looking for general widgets.

I would use Indoor Widgets - Personally, I like to spread the wealth among subpages. I am alsoa fan of more highly targetted terms. Last reason- don't forget the people- they have already expresses in interest in Indoor Widgets!

Yes. s all say, link to your inner pages. And have all the pages in your website link to each other in an organized mannner and you have PR distributed everywhere.

You win.

The indoor widget directory is an ideal matchup in terms of potential visitor interest level. It's a great match contextually which relates to relevance. It's also a great strategy for assuring that your sub-pages receive a good deep spidering.

I think of it like this, Spider entrances eventually become serp listings. Serp listings eventually become visitor entrances.

I'd go with the closest match possible.

If the site linking to you is specifically about Indoor Widgets, and you have an Indoor Widget page/section then that seems to be the most logical.

But it may also depend on where the link appears on the other site.

If all they have is a "related links" pages, then a link to your home page might be ok.

Sometimes when I make a link to another site I will structure it like this.....

[Widget Wonders] has some great articles and information about [indoor widgets].

Where the [...] is the anchor text.

The [Widget Wonders] link goes to the home page
The [Indoor Widgets] links goes to an interior page that is more specific.

This gives my visitors the choice of going to the other sites home page or directly to the relevant info on the other site.
