Hi all,

I've just launched my website and I'm about to embark upon the "Quest for the Holy Links". I don't have a links page yet, but I will begin creating one soon.

In the long run, if I swap links with websites that are lower than a PR5, will it do more harm than good? I plan to swap links with other websites that are relevant in my category, not just any ol' website that comes along (FFA's or such). I read in another post that a webmaster had swapped links with over 11,000 sites and had a PR8. So, is it quality or quantity.

Also, I've been studying Brett Tabke's article:
[webmasterworld.com...]

Under letter "N" he states: "Look around your keyword sector in Googles version of the ODP. (this is best done AFTER getting an odp listing - or two)."

I don't understand what he means by waiting until after you get an odp listing. What am I missing? Why use Google's version of the ODP instead of the ODP itself?

Also, any other tips or pointers on how to go about this quest are GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks!

You ask many quetions! Let me see what I can say:

In the long run, if I swap links with websites that are lower than a PR5, will it do more harm than good?

Would you rather receive $100 bills or $10 bills? Well, for every 10 $10 bills you get you have the equivalent of a $100 bill. To return to links, lower PR links are much easier to get than high PR ones. And, of course, like your site they may improve over time.

So, is it quality or quantity.

Really bad quality (bad neighborhood) will harm you, but apart from that it is currently quantity (I put PR as part of the quantity). Much as you read about "relevant links" there is lylle or no hard evidence that Google currently gives any weight to it.

Note the emphasis on curently. Google is clearly making ongoing changes to its algorithms, what is true today may no longer apply tomorrow.

I don't understand what he means by waiting until after you get an odp listing.

Many webmasters will be much happier to exchange links with you after you have obtained the "starter PR" from ODP.

Why use Google's version of the ODP instead of the ODP itself?

Google's version of the directory is sorted by PR, makes it just a bit easier to know what the PR of potential partners is.

Hope that some of this, at least, helps! Getting links is, for many, a never ending process.

How can I get inbound links? [webmasterworld.com]

Also follow the other threads it links to and you should get some good info. Also use the Library. It has some good threads. HTH :)
