Simple start.

Goto all the major search engines, enter your top 10 keywords, take the top 100 sites for each search and collect all the backlinks. Then email them all saying hello and asking if they want to exchange links or can you pay to advertise on their site.

You will get PR over time and relevant traffic within days.

Watch for the interesting emails as some of these sites will have a great deal of relevant traffic and may be willing to deal.

If you know Which Keyphrase you want to optimize for then half your battle is won ;)

i search keyphrase in google and check the number of backward links of the top sites

Check also on Alltheweb. One query which should help you in Alltheweb is

link:www.domain.com -site:www.domain.com
.

It filters the results a bit. If there are more than one domain which is dominating the backlinks then you can use

link:www.domain.com -site:www.domain.com -site:www.seconddomain.com

Related thread which is highly recommended is :-

The Library in this forum is also a good place to spend some time. HTH :)

Ok
I have a more specific query.

What are the things which matter in backward links:

a) Number of backward links.
b) PR of the webpages which links to my website.
c) Anchor Text which is used to link to my website.
d) Number of outward links given by these webpages( I need not have headache for this ... )

Anything more?

How does google decides that the webpage which is linking to me is of the same theme as mine?
Simply getting link from high PR webpages which are some other themes won't help.Am I right?

Does it considers the
a) Title of the webpages linking to me.
b) The frequency of keyphrases in their webpage for which i m optimising.
c) The neighbouring text of the anchor text.

e) Quality of website you are linking to. Its very important.

f) Link management on their website. Many people have a links page. Then as the number of links increase they have a small links 2 link on the first page. Similarly a small links 3 page on second link page. This generally means that the last link page is buried so deep that forget visitros it might hardly trasfer any PR. Generally Link directories are better in organization and proper management of links.

How does google decides that the webpage which is linking to me is of the same theme as mine?

Nothing is certain but the probable factors you have yourself mentioned :-

a) Title of the webpages linking to me.
b) The frequency of keyphrases in their webpage for which i m optimising.
c) The neighbouring text of the anchor text.

FWIW Googleguy has repeatedly denied about themes AFAIK.

Simply getting link from high PR webpages which are some other themes won't help.Am I right?

In my Personal Opinion that is wrong. Get as many links as you can. The toughest job for you as an SEO would be how you manage links on yours as well as partner sites.

Anything else ;)

To go back to taj79,

I start off by finding as many possible linking partners as possible. I look for everything I can find to do with "widgets" I store each of these sites in a excel spreadsheet, domain, pr and email address.

When I get sufficient number I send out emails en mass.

The basic email I use which I find works out well for me is:

"Hi...

While searching the internet I came across your website, and wondered would you be interested in exchanging links with [example.com...] This is a new site, and it will have a much better google Page Rank at the end of next month.

If you forward me you're linking details, I will add your site immediately.

My linking details are:

...

If you have any other web sites that would benefit from a links exchange, please do not hesitate to contact me at this email address. "

IMHO If you are working with a new website which does not have a Page Rank I would state this fact in your email.

The other things I would note are if the website is using spam and how many links does it have on its linking pages. When I started off I was a lot less pickey.

Check out this thread: [webmasterworld.com...]

Good luck,

Make sure the links are indexed in the search engines....ranked well....!

And they are not FFA links, NO Guestbook Links, NO Link Farms...100% geniune HTML links. NO Hidden Links or Hidden Text!

Hi,
I have read many a times that Guestbook links are not good ..... but i have checked the back links of several websites in google ... and found guestbook .....

ok i m specifying my problem:

my website is on topic say A
several sub-topics come under this B,C,D ....

there are many websites on topic A ... or just on one of the sub-topic.
If i want to optimise for say subtopic B
is there any difference in the links given by
website solely on topic C & websites solely on topic B have?.... given they have same PR .....same anchor text ...

The problem can be otherwise stated as:

I have seen several websites with several themes in it.

there are web development websites with different sections in it:
art,babies,shopping,automobiles,computers,cosmetics ....
does google sees the theme of website or just the webpage separately ....?

themes....it appears that google doesn´t care about themes and it may not be a priority in the future, but if doing the work for links why not do it on theme...atleast that way you will get some traffic also. And Teoma have openly stated that they are implementing theming and hence themed links will count in the future on some engines.
