How to create a dramatic "database search"

I am mostly speaking of something that is on this background check site instantcheckmate where they use a fake database search that goes on and on and on pretending it is scanning info they already have instantly. I wonder what they are using to make a scanning box appear after someone enters name and email...

Could be something as simple as a .gif or .swf pop-up triggered by "submit".

With a fake but realistic-looking 'animated' '*.gif' image, it is easy to pretend some kind of specific, goal-oriented "search" is going on.
