Javascript dealing with &gt in breadcrumbs

Hi all,

I am almost finished building my first website and just putting finishing touches to my breadcrumbs that I wrote in javascript myself. The breadcrumbs work well, except I want to add a pair of greater than symbols (">>") between each breadcrumb link. How do you include these in a JavaScript breadcrumb? Everything I have tried so far does not work.
