Ranges for changing a selection

I need to build a very basic text editor that can change selected text into bold, does anyone know the what I need to do.

I can't use any licensed products out there it has to be built from scratch.

Have you tried looking for an "open source wysiwyg text editor?" I found a few that are quite good -- even if you can't use an open source licensed product, you can look at their source code for how it works.
