i'm with bcolflesh...
html-kit is great. has a number of time saving options: assign keystrokes to functions, update to style sheets, create div based templates..lots of plug ins.

Does HTML-Kit have any documentation yet? It seemed like a beautiful little package that would be really nice to use if they only provided a 2-page cheat-sheet defining the basics. The developer is curiously uncommunicative about how to use it.

I've just migrated to a new machine and dumped my old installation, and I'm now thinking about utilities to download, so I'm wondering whether I should grab it again.

I like NoteTab Pro a lot. It's a general purpose text editor that has a lot of html functionality incorporated, and it's probably the singlemost used program I have.

Now that I have XP, I'm also considering checking out the latest version of Homesite. In its earlier versions, it was a wonderfully solid html editor, but when Allaire took it over and rebuilt it, it became an absolute resource hog on 9x systems. Now it's under the MacroMedia umbrella. Anyone have experience with it on XP?

I've tried some of the above but personally still prefer Arachnophilia 4 (not keen on 5 though).
A bit outdated (paste in your doc type) but very functional, clean and tidy.

NoteTab Pro or TopStyle would work well for you in this role. Those are both available as light/free versions as well.

I use wordpad. Its free, comes with all version of Windows.
What you see is what you get.
Works fine and doesn't stick in garbage I don't ask for.
I used to use Notepad, but some files got too large.

I did my first web page with Arachnophilia. It's simple, good, allows previews, colored syntax and tags, etc. You can't go wrong with that.

Another vote for HTML-KIT.

I don't use any plugins except spell checker.
I hate what HTML tidy did to my code.

But the quick preview screen is what places it far above notepad or word. Just hit the tab to see how it looks.

I used to use one called edit-revolution and really liked it but I lost it in a crash and it doesn't seem to be available anymore.

I use notepad for my html. It is also free with windows. I think word can also be used for making web pages.

I would stick to Notepad as Word will put in a lot of code that will "bloat" your html files. This was alluded to in an earlier post but I think that it is worth noting.

I use MultiEdit to edit my html - it is not free but does have built in html code support and FTP, plus a lot of stuff that I don't use. I have used MultiEdit for many years of xBase, C, C++, Perl (cgi) and other general editing.

To get into really serious programming I would recomend investing in a full featured editor - there are lots out there - choose the one that make sense to you - there are lots of free trials.

Has hlp files and highlighting for several programming langauges, loads "any" size files, works great in a group settings, and can read/write binary files too.

On Windows I use "NoteTab" and "Minimum Profit" (latter is extremely basic, yet powerful). I've used "UltraEdit" as well a few times, that's a good one too.

My favorite is CuteHTML. Makes me able to "replace all" in 50 files at once. Then of course the good old Notepad.

Crimson Editor is my favorite multi-purpose text editor. It allows you to select text in columns! Not just in rows! Which is so incredibly handy some times.

Another HTML-Kit user. It's intuitive enough that help is rarely necessary. The ability to open a new file based upon any number of templates is also quite handy.

The Tidy implementation isn't worth the download - download the HTML Validator extension for Firefox instead and you'll be completely set (if you load your pages into Firefox, which is, granted, another step).
