i am using 1st page 2000 [evrsoft.com]. this freeware html editor is great to use and works well for me.

AceHTML 6.
It's a wonderful app, yet slightly expensive. I bought it and use it every day. Features syntax highlighting, code database, it has support for HTML4, XHTML1.0, XHTML1.1, CSS, Javascript, PHP, and ASP.

Wonderful tool.

I used the free AceHTML 5, but got turned off when it started pushing me to buy the pay version AceHTML 6, which I tried and abandoned when it crashed on me. The earlier versions of AceHTML 6 were buggy.

I tried Nvu but it rewrote my codes, such as replacing all the "/>" in my <img> tags with ">", when it saw that the doctype was HTML 4.1.

On the recommendations in this thread, I downloaded Crimson Editor, HTML-Kit and Firstpage 2000. HTML-Kit is the one I am staying with. Just the split-view preview screen where you can preview in IE and Firefox side by side is worth its weight in gold. But unfortunately it doesn't handle international languages.

If you're not using Firefox by itself, I highly recommend it. I've found the Web Developer and HTML Validator extensions to be great assets, along with HTML-Kit (or any editors). While HTML-Kit allows you to test your code according to the W3C standards, these extensions insure that you're code is the best it can be (in my opinion).

Oh, and good choice on HTML-Kit ;)

I used to use Notepad, but some files got too large.

This one, Portello on [portello.org...] is free.
It is like an WYSIWYG but you edit directly in the browser on the page, witouth any login page. You donīt even have to prepare the site before. I donīt mess up the code.

Portello - that sounds kinda nice for someone I have in mind ... I suppose there is an english version of the software? Is it restricted to html/htm files, or could someone edit more than that?

Yes it is in English also (I prefere the Swedish version as you will see in my English writing), you just choose language after installation.
I have give to some of my clients Portello (I work as web designer) so they can to some minor changes on there sites. It works very well. Ok the program is free but I teach them little about the program and get paid for it.
I use it for changes and also to file transfer insteed of WS-ftp/Cute FTP. Very easy, just surf to the site and activate it. In the "Site view" you can transfer files, with drag and drop from (or to) your local host.
Right click on a file in the "Site view" and you can also edit with Notepad.
