publishing problems with FP

Am a self-taught non-tech webmaster and manage a large and a small web site with FP2003. Pretty straightforward, forms are about as flashy as it gets. No problem with the smaller site. However, the larger one (with 7 subwebs-2 managed by others) is causing problems. Since Feb. I cannot publish the root or any subwebs to my desktop other than by ftp which complicates using FP. Publishing slows and FP freezes by itself or if I stop publishing. No error messages. Then I cannot get back into the site, usually without rebooting. I can sometimes make minor changes directly on the site, but prefer to work off-line. This happened almost exactly at the time I upgraded with the hosting company to have e-commerce capabilities. Hosting and Microsoft support have not been able to figure it out.
Could it be incompatibility with a folder (rather than a subweb as the person was instructed) created with Dreamweaver in the root directory (I have deleted it but perhaps the damage has been done. If so, how to correct it)? Or with Cart32 software used to create shopping cart? How can I get access again so I can update the site and pursue the e-commerce option? I'm tired of being told that the problem is my machine, my version of FP, my connection, the size of the site or that we need to re-install FP extensions. These solutions seem entirely unimaginative and have been completely unhelpful.
