I'm considering upgrading the the newest Dreamweaver from version 4. I don't use DW as much as I used to because the old one dealt with css so poorly, but I understand that's gotten much better.

I might go for it if the new DW can handle having files stored below Web root (so passwords, etc. are "invisible").

Does anyone know if this is possible now?

Also can the new DW set file permissions on Unix servers?

hi zollerwagner

if the new DW can handle having files stored below Web root

to my knowledge if your webspace supplier gives you access below the root DW can also reach that per the settings you make in the settings in DW - no chenges to that in DW2004

can the new DW set file permissions on Unix servers

I still think you need the extension to do that :)

/Kind regards

Thanks! You'd think they'd add a chmod feature, wouldn't you?

Thanks, Benihana. I guess I'll stick with using a third-party ftp client. Having something visual makes it a lot easier than struggling to get the path right.

Actually, DW 2004 dropped the ability to chmod.

As far as CSS, 2004 is way better. However, 2004 crashes a whole lot more than any older version ever did. If you look around you will see a whole lot of complaints about its stability. Even Macromedia admitted that they were not happy with the number of complaints. However, they did release a patch that fixed a lot of the isssues.

Thanks, Yowza.

More crashes? Ouch, my old DW4 crashes enough as it is! (I know one event that causes this is searching for a piece of code throughout the entire site. It'll crash after displaying about 15 or so files.)

I moved from DW 3 to version 4 about a month ago on my way to the MX 2004 upgrade.
Version 4 crashed at least 10 times a day no matter how I installed it or the updates.

Last week I took the jump to MX 2004 and have not had a single crash since. Looks like they may have it tweaked to work, at least in the download version.
