.html or .htm in Dreamweaver

I realize that this is not Dreamweaver specific, but...

This is one of those stupid questions that someone will respond with "the only stupid questions are the ones that you don't ask," but come on, this really is silly; however, I want to know.

The reason that I posted it here is because I use Dreamweaver MX and .htm is the default file extension, but I know that most people use.html (including myself).

Now can someone tell me what the difference is and which one is better to use. I just started using XHTML and I am designing with CSS-p instead of tables.

Thanks to all that come out to play,

Eric

html is possibly the more "correct". htm became popular pre windows95 days when windows users could only have 3 letter extensions.

Apart from this there is no advantage in using one over the another, apart from htm being one letter shorter (and when you add that up in links, filenames, for bandwidth etc etc and convenience its not an insignificant advantage)
