Do you use it?

I wonder how many webmasters or web-editors use typography characters on web. I mean the use of quotes, dashes etc., for example “word” instead of "word" and 15—30 instead of raw version 15-30.

Welcome to WebmasterWorld, ruandy!

I tend to use escape codes for a few special entites, like the em-dash (as opposed to the normal keyboard en-dash), currency symbols, the < and > characters, copyright and trademark symbols and accented letters.

After that I generally use the standard character set of the font I'm using.

A List Apart has two very good articles about this: The Trouble with Em n En [alistapart.com] and Typography Matters [alistapart.com]

But no - I don't use proper typography. Maybe I should...

To a degree, i have to use a lexicon of typography that is universal to all browsers, though i do not normally do it by hand, rather I know certain characters that are represented differently in various browsers, hence will actively edit to find solutions.
