Multi-page search and replace in FP

Is there an easy way to do a multi-page search and replace in Front Page? I have tried it, and I keep having to click through various dialog boxes for each file, which I find incredibly annoying. I was able to do it pretty easily in Home Site, but most of our web development is done in FP, so I'd rather use that because I know FP can get kind of wonky sometimes if you edit your pages in another program.

Which version are you using workerbee?

Not sure if its the same for all versions, in the 2002version when you go to Edit > Find / Replace their is 3 options on the left
- All Pages
- Selected Pages
- Current Page

I'm using 2000. I can get it to search and replace across all the pages, but it stops at each page and asks if I want to save this page, close it and open the next - is there a default somewhere that I can change so it will just replace the text without asking me about it? Or maybe a way to select a number of pages to search on rather than defaulting to the whole web?

Not sure if there is an option to change the way its behaving....do you have the pages set up as a "frontpage web"? ie when you click View > Folder List there is a map of your web on the left.

I think it might ask you to re-save if the files are all not part of a single web, otherwise it should whisk through all the files where there is a search/replace to be done.

are you doing the S&R with the pages closed? Try opening all the pages in teh editor first and then run the S&R - of course when you close the pages they'll ask you to save them again - such is life when working with editors.

ReplaceEM [orbit.org] will make you life a whole lot easier if you are doing S&R often across several pages.

The pages are all in one web, but in different directories within the web. I was trying the S&R with the pages closed, but I'll try it with them open and see if it's any easier. Thanks for the link to ReplaceEM - I'll check it out.

I don't think there's a way around that confirmation prompt for extended search-and-replace operations--or, if there is, I've never managed to find it.

I love FrontPage--I've maintained and built a site of nearly 3,500 pages with it--but when I want to do a search and replace across multiple pages, I do it in HomeSite. Another outstanding tool for extended search-and-replace operations is Search and Replace from Funduc Software at funduc.com. (It has a slight learning curve but is amazingly versatile, and it even comes in 12 different languages--including Japanese.)

FrontPage 2002 is what you want. It will search and replace site-wide quickly and easily.

Swordsman is right...FP2K will open up every page in HTML view and ask you to confirm its actions, but FP2002 has an option to perform global site changes in one step. It will warn you that Search & Replace done globally cannot be undone before doing so but after that it runs smoothly.

The other problem with FP search and replace is if you want to do a block of code (multiple lines). Does FP 2002 take care of this? How do these other products mentioned work with multiple lines of text?
